Red Head Lighting Videos And Photography
There is no single definition of a red head light. What all red head lights have in common is that they are continuous rather than strobe lights and they have moveable reflectors attached around the light. At one time red head lighting was used almost exclusively for videos, but they are now becoming popular in photography as well.
- Using the reflectors in different positions can create different effects with the same light.
While red head lighting is widely used, there is little information from photographers in exactly how they use the light to create various studio lighting effects. Most seem to use red head lighting in the same way they use other continuous lighting sources. They can be used to light large areas, but are also useful as fill and backlights.
Red head lights are more expensive than other continuous lights. They are an excellent choice for videos or still photography, but their cost often prevents them from being used by all but the most dedicated amateur photographers. The light heads are usually at least 650 watts.
Red head lighting is hot continuous lighting using an incandescent bulb. Incandescent light is preferred by many photographers and videographers because it produces true colors. What is you see is what you get in terms of lighting. There aren’t any unpleasant surprises.
As part of a professional studio lighting set up, a red head lighting can be quite useful. Other continuous lights work well, too. With most studio lighting, the lights you choose are dependent on your preferences and your budget.
Until recently, a red head lighting kit would cost over $2000 (USD). There are some newer kits that are considerably more reasonable. No reviews on these kits are available at this time. It may be possible to purchase a new red head lighting kit for as little as $1000. You may also be able to locate these lights used.
For serious videographers, red head lighting is a must. The versatility and the ability to use the light for large areas is important when shooting videos. These are the lights used by professional film makers and if you want your videos to be professional quality you will need to get a kit.
For photographers, the advantages of red head lighting are less well defined. Other continuous lighting sources work well in photography and whether you need a red head or not will depend on your personal style and preference. If you photography is of an artistic nature, you may want to consider adding a red head lighting kit to your studio lighting arsenal.
If you have never used red head lighting, you may want to try a colleague’s kit before you decide whether you want to invest in your own kit.
