There is no single definition of a red head light. What all red head lights have in common is that they are continuous rather than strobe lights and they have moveable reflectors attached around the light. At one time red head lighting was used almost exclusively for videos, but they are now becoming popular in photography as well.

While red head lighting is widely used, there is little information from photographers in exactly how they use the light to create various studio lighting effects. For photographers, the advantages of red head lighting are less well defined. Other continuous lighting sources work well in photography and whether you need a red head or not will depend on your personal style and preference.
